Source review date: 20 September 2026. This is not the date of news publication or scientific confirmation.
Is it newly discovered?
No. According to the WHO explanation, human metapneumovirus was first identified in 2001 and has circulated among humans for decades. Its increased prominence in the news alone does not indicate the emergence of a new virus.
What symptoms does it cause?
It often causes cold-like symptoms, but it can lead to more severe illness. Infants, older adults, and some people with underlying conditions or weakened immune systems are at greater risk of severe disease.
Should everyone get tested?
No. A physician makes this decision based on the circumstances; molecular testing can help with diagnosis, but it is not necessary for every cold.
What should we check about the news?
This article cites the WHO’s general explanation dated 10 January 2025 and is not a report of a current increase in cases in Iran. Check the date of the news, the location of the report, and the official source separately; a seasonal increase is not the same as the discovery of a new virus.
